Femicide Nation Mural
Femicide Nation Mural, 2022
Hosier Lane, Melbourne / Naarm
The Femicide Nation mural is a collaboration between journalist and femicide researcher Sherele Moody and artist Dans Bain. It is based on Sherele's ground-breaking ongoing project the Australian Femicide and Child Death Map, which holds the stories of 2500 women and children killed in Australia.
Choosing the iconic entry to Melbourne's Hosier Lane for the piece, Sherele and Dains knew the mural would be eradicated by street taggers within weeks – the perfect metaphor for the way in which Australian women are erased by violence.
Across this bird's eye view of Australia are hundreds of red hearts, each marking the locations of the unlawful deaths of women and children. One heart represents 10 killings. The names of 200-plus victims radiate around the coastline.
The project was photographed from start to end, ensuring complete documentation of the evocative work of public art.
This mural stands as a powerful reminder of the pervasive issue of male violence and the lives lost to it. Through its ephemeral existence and detailed documentation, the Femicide Nation mural ensures these stories of tragedy and injustice are not forgotten, urging viewers to confront the realities behind the art and inspire change in their communities.
