What Teachers Are Saying
A powerful presentation that sparked courage, creativity and conversation
Dans Bain came as a guest speaker to speak with the Year 6's during their PYPX (Inquiry projects) at the end of 2024. Students in Year 6 were interested in gender, inequality and also art. We were very fortunate to hear Dans speak about her artwork 'The lost petition' and share experiences and the journey she has been on.
The students were deeply engaged with the topics presented, showing genuine interest and enthusiasm throughout. The presentation not only held their attention but also sparked thoughtful conversation and meaningful reflection. By connecting the themes of activism to real-life examples, students were able to see the relevance of these ideas in their own lives and communities.
One of the most impactful aspects was how the presentation fostered a sense of community conversation. Students shared personal insights and experiences, which enriched our discussions and helped create a space where diverse voices could be heard and respected. It was clear that the material resonated with them on a personal level.
Importantly, the presentation provided a creative outlet for students to express their thoughts and emotions. Whether through visual arts, performance, or writing, students found powerful ways to act through the arts, transforming ideas into action. This creative engagement helped solidify their understanding of the themes and inspired many to consider how they might use their own voices for change.
Overall, the presentation made a lasting impact—cultivating not only understanding but also empowerment. It bridged classroom learning with the real world, encouraging students to think critically, care deeply, and express themselves courageously.
We are hoping that Dans will come out again this year and speak to our now Year 6's! We cannot thank her enough!
